The Yukon
The Yukon is in the Land of the Midnight Sun and in the Land of the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights). The Yukon is one of the few places where authentic experiences such as the Klondike Gold Rush and cultural themes are immersed in a wilderness setting of majestic mountain vistas, boreal forest, Parks, with stunning lakes and rivers and opportunities to view wildlife. Visitors are attracted by the spectacular scenic drives and routes within Yukon and Yukon/Alaska as well as the opportunity for a variety of guided adventure experiences.
Alaska
Alaska is a vast and beautiful wilderness, one-fifth the size of the USA, with wonderful wildlife. It has the highest coastal mountain range in the world, over half the worlds glaciers and over three million lakes. Most visitors enter Alaska through Seward, either from a cruise ship (see page 18), by road from the Yukon or direct flight from Vancouver to Anchorage.
Northwest Territories
Frequent flights take you into Yellowknife. From here you can drive into the western half of the Northwest Territories, dominated by the amazing South Nahanni River a mix of tranquil water, frenzied rapids, deep canyons and whirlpools, steaming hot springs and complexes of caves, set in a valley of stunning beauty. Virginia Falls are twice the height of Niagara, and the power, force and noise has to be experienced to be believed. Explore by canoe or plane the Nahanni National Park, for its buffalo herds and Kodiak brown bears. Visit Wood Buffalo National Park; the home of the last great free roaming buffalo herds, whooping cranes and the summer residence of pelicans or join the MS Norweta for a fascinating cruise along the Mackenzie River.
Nunavut
The Inuit territory of Nunavut is one of the last great frontiers. Fly into Iqaluit on Baffin Island, one of the worlds largest islands, which lies entirely within Nunavut. Home to a population of just over 20,000, the island offers some of the most spectacular landscapes Pond Inlet, one of the crown jewels of Nunavut, is truly beautiful, with its mountains, glaciers and icebergs. Settled for centuries by the Dorset and Thule people, the community has a rich archaeological heritage. A variety of local tours are available, including the opportunity to sea kayak among seals along the floe edge, and the wonderful tusked narwhales.
