Northwest Beaufort Sea Holman Passage Resolute Beechey Island baffin island victoria island boothia Cambridge Bay peninsula Coronation Gulf king william island Hudson Bay Photo: Ernie Andrews Northwest Passage 12-night voyage A scant century after Roald Amundsen's first successful voyage through the Northwest Passage, we'll make our own bid to traverse one of the world's most elusive sea routes Following our success in 2006 and 2007, the 2008 Arctic summer sees our third attempt to sail through the Northwest Passage, the long-sought sea route linking the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans through Canada's far north. Over 13 days, we'll forge a westerly route as far as the ice will allow. Wildlife is abundant and we're likely to meet polar bear, walrus, musk ox and Arctic fox, as well as astonishing birdlife and possibly even narwhals, the legendary tusked whale. Starting at the eastern end of the Passage, we'll push into Larsen Sound, where permanent polar pack ice bottlenecks it's been the nemesis of many past explorers. We sail southward through the Arctic Archipelago, through Bellot Strait to Point Zenith. These waters are renowned for challenging navigation and rapidly changing conditions, as well as diverse wildlife. We'll attempt a landing at Victory Point on King William Island where a cairn provides the only written clue to the fate of explorer, John Franklin and his men, who disappeared here in 1845. We head west through Simpson Strait to Coronation Gulf. Many of the waterways in this part of the Arctic are shallow and poorly charted. Coupled with moving sea ice, our sailing route is often determined at the last minute, contributing to the sense of adventure. We'll sail west between Victoria Island and the mainland and up into the Beaufort Sea, hoping to visit a community on the west coast of Victoria Island before heading south to land on the mainland Northwest Territories. We'll hike up onto the shale slopes of the Smoking Hills, which have been spontaneously burning for centuries before heading back towards Cambridge Bay. Our last excursion is likely to be on Victoria Island, a great place to hike and possibly see musk ox. We finally arrive in Cambridge Bay, having completed one of the world's great ocean voyages.
