The Domain of the Great Bear The primeval forests of the Central Coast of British Columbia are the only habitat of the elusive and rarely seen all-white Spirit Bear. One of few areas on the coast to see the Spirit Bear is Princess Royal Island. As only 10% of Black Bears in the area have the recessive gene giving it snow-white fur, you will need perseverance and some luck to spot one. The Great Bear Rainforest', as the area is now known, is also home to significant populations of the magnificent Black and Brown Bears, drawn to the estuaries of the large coastal rivers to feast on the abundant salmon moving up river to spawn. You spend a day with local Gitga'at native guides who will share their culture and history and lead you to their favourite bear-viewing sites. Your chances of seeing marine mammals on this trip are excellent too. Fitzhugh Sound and Whale Channel are good areas for Humpback Whales, whilst the coastline near Cape Caution supports a summer population of Grey Whales and the entire coast is renowned for its Orcas.
